In 1974, a group of enthusiastic people, stimulated from the Netherlands, established the "Foundation Blindenzorg Aruba". In 1975, the name was changed into the Papiamento name "Fundacion Arubano di esnan Visualmente Incapacita", which, abbreviated, would be easily recognizable in the community as FAVI. The name FAVI is now linked directly to people with visual impairments within the Aruban community.
FAVI provides assistance and guidance to visually impaired and blind persons, with the aim to contribute to their enjoyment of life and, where desirable and possible, their personal development and integration. Enjoyment of life means: bringing people out of their isolation; that they can enjoy their lives; that they have social contacts; that life is worthwhile.
Anyone with questions about being visually impaired or blind can apply to FAVI. FAVI provides information and advice on rehabilitation, education, housing, as well as research. These services are there for people who are visually impaired or blind, and for those who also have a mental, physical or other sensory impairment. Family members, professionals and other persons concerned can also apply to FAVI for information and the promotion of expertise. Based on the request for assistance of the client, the staff of the FAVI will examine what can and what cannot be done. The aid offer is tailored to each individual client. In this way, FAVI hopes that it can approach the client respectfully and satisfactorily.
